Study Abroad

Earning Major/Minor Credit Abroad

The Political Science Department will accept credit for up to five courses from study abroad for majors (two in political science and three in related courses). The Department will accept credit for one study abroad course in political science for minors.

Research the course descriptions of the classes you plan to take abroad so your adviser can consult them and ensure the classes correspond to major/minor requirements at Northwestern. The Political Science Department cannot give prior approval or credit for courses that students plan to take during their study abroad. But advisers can give students guidance on whether study abroad courses appear to correspond with major/minor requirements.

For credit in Political Science, meet with the Director of Undergraduate Studies. We recommend that students keep copies of the syllabi for study abroad courses for which they seek to receive credit and bring them to their meeting with the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Figure out which courses you want to take at Northwestern when you /return/ from study abroad. This is necessary because not all courses are offered every quarter.

All students hoping to study abroad during fall, winter, or spring quarters must attend a "Study Abroad 101 Information Session" to learn about Northwestern study abroad policies and procedures. Those interested only in summer study abroad should call the Study Abroad Office to speak with the Summer Program Coordinator. For a schedule of Study Abroad 101 Information Sessions, click here. Only students who have attended an information session are eligible to receive an application to study abroad during the academic year.
