Fellowships & Scholarships for Undergraduates

Northwestern University Undergraduate Research Grants
Northwestern’s Office of the Provost administers Undergraduate Research Grants that are open to undergraduate students in all fields and years throughout the university.  Students may apply for the two types of grants available. Academic Year Grants cover research expenses up to $1000 for a quarter-length project. Summer Grants provide an unrestricted $3000 to cover research and living expenses for full-time summer projects. Students can apply for Academic Year Grants at any of six deadlines throughout Fall and Winter Quarters, and for Summer Grants at a separate deadline in late Winter Quarter.

Weinberg College

Undergraduate Research Scholarships

The Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce the availability of research scholarships to recognize exceptional promise in undergraduate research in the arts and sciences.  These scholarships, provided through the generosity of donors, are awarded by the Weinberg College Committee on Superior Students and Honors to those Weinberg College students who, in the judgment of the Committee, best demonstrate promise of distinguished research in their major.

All scholarship applications require

1) a statement from the student explaining the research project to be undertaken, the significance of the research in the field, the student's preparation for undertaking the project, and the methodology to be followed,

2) a recommendation from the faculty member who will supervise the research,

3) a recommendation from a second faculty member not involved with the research. 

The Kriegbaum awards are open to research in any arts and sciences area.  Please refer to the information below for specific deadlines and award announcement dates.

Katherine L. Kriegbaum Scholarships

 

These scholarships, with no restriction as to field of study, are given as research accounts to rising Weinberg College seniors.  Kriegbaum Scholars must be registered in 399 while pursuing their research. In addition to the materials noted above, applications should include a proposed budget explaining the necessity for, and probable use of, the stipend. Departments and programs that offer an undergraduate major may nominate at most two junior candidates for these awards. Departmentally endorsed nominations should be sent to Associate Dean Ron Braeutigam, 1922 Sheridan Road, Ev 4030 by April 21, 2007.  Announcement of the awards will be made by the Dean before the end of the academic year.  Research funds can be made available to Kriegbaum Scholars as early as the summer before the senior year.

 

 

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship

Program

This program provides undergraduate and graduate funding to participants as they are prepared academically and professionally to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service.

Women and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.

The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship

The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship was established in 1987 to provide college graduates with the opportunity to gain a Washington perspective on key issues of peace and security.  Twice yearly, the Fellowship's Board of Directors selects a group of outstanding individuals to spend six to nine months in Washington.  Supported by a monthly stipend, the Fellows serve as full-time project assistants at the participating organization of their choice.

$500 Merit-Based Scholarship

The Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) and the Washington Internship Institute (WII) will co-sponsor a $500 merit-based scholarship to any ACHS member student who participates in the WII internship program in Washington, DC. The State PIRGs Fellowship Program

Investigate, educate, advocate and organize each day on behalf of citizens and the environment. The state PIRGs are a national network of nonprofit activist organizations that advocate on behalf of the public interest. James Madison Fellowship

The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 for the purpose of improving teaching about the United States Constitution in secondary schools. The Foundation is an independent agency of the Executive Branch of the federal government. Funding for the Foundation’s programs comes from Congress and generous contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations. The Foundation has a Board of Trustees and its daily operations are directed by a president and a small staff. The Foundation’s office is located in Washington, D.C.

The foundation offers two types of fellowships:

Junior fellowships are awarded to students who are about to complete, or have completed, their undergraduate course of study and plan to begin graduate work on a full-time basis. Junior Fellows have two years to complete their degree.

Senior fellowships are awarded to teachers who wish to undertake work for a graduate degree on a part-time basis through summer and evening classes. Senior Fellows have up to five years to complete their degree.

The fellowships are intended exclusively for graduate study leading to a master’s degree.

American Research Institute in Turkey

Fellowships for intensive advanced Turkish language study in Istanbul, Turkey.

Davee Fellowships Summer 2007

Davee Fellowships are available this summer to help disadvantaged students in the humanities and the social sciences begin an undergraduate research career.  The goal is to help these students become competitive applicants to outstanding graduate programs in their fields.
