Foreign Language Certificate
To encourage the integration of foreign language study into political science major, the Department of Political Science has created a new Certificate of Achievement in a Foreign Language. Foreign language is defined as a language other than English and one's native language. A student may earn this certificate by obtaining a grade of B or better in two courses that fall into the following categories:
- A 300 level course that counts toward the satisfaction of the political science major conducted in a foreign language through study abroad.
- The completion of a regular Northwestern political science course at the 300 level in which the student utilized his or her foreign language skills. This option requires students to take the initiative to approach a faculty member at the start of a term to work out a plan for the student to bring his or her language skills into the class assignments. The plan may involve reading a text in the original language rather than translation, examination of additional or alternative sources, conducting interviews, writing a paper in the foreign language, or any other assignment approved by the instructor. The 300 level work may include 399 (student designed independent research) or 398 (thesis research) enrollments.
