Sara Monoson

Professor Monoson is associate professor of political science and classics. She is  the author of Plato's Democratic Entanglements: Athenian Politics and the Practice of Philosophy (Princeton University Press, 2000), which was awarded the 2001 Foundations Book Prize by the American Political Science Association for the Best First Book in Political Theory.  She has also written articles on Athenian democratic thought, Thucydides and international relations theory,  Aristotle's theory of slavery,  American proslavery ideology's use of Aristotle,  and allusions to Sicily in Plato's Republic and Gorgias.  Her current work investigates the appropriations of  "Socrates"  in American popular culture and politics.  She is currently Chair of the Department of Classics and Director of the Classical Traditions Initiative at Northwestern.
